Hefei General Machinery Research Institute was founded in Beijing in 1956 and moved to Hefei in 1969. It develops, tests and inspects pressure vessels, compressors, pumps, valves, seals and related equipment for the petrochemical, energy and other industries. Part of state-owned Sinomach since 1999, it hosts the State Key Laboratory of High-end Compressors and Systems and has nearly 1,500 employees.
